“Unusually uplifted and elegant. Played with dance-like precision, grace, and humor.” -The New Yorker
“A really special show. The direction was absolutely off the hook phenomenal. A tremendous antidote to Broadway and big-produced shows.” -AndrewAndrew.com
The Golden Dragon
Q: What PlayCo production reminded two critics of cult classic film director Quentin Tarantino, Romanian absurdist playwright Eugene Ionesco, pop culture TV sensation Lost, and ancient mythology?
A: The Golden Dragon, of course!
Dynamic critic duo, AndrewAndrew, know how to review theatre with style and wit. We enjoyed this video essay on their visit to The Golden Dragon so much, we wanted to share it with you.

“For those trying to keep abreast of the more exciting playwriting voices beyond the United States and Britain, the Play Company has become an invaluable resource. The acclaimed German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig, little seen on these shores, presents a dark comedy about all hell breaking loose in a pan-Asian restaurant. With the rising director Ed Sylvanus Iskandar (“These Seven Sicknesses”) at the helm, the production shouldn’t be hurting for ambition.”

Rehearsals for The Golden Dragon were intense.
We used the theatre space Director Ed Sylvanus Iskandar usually uses for his invite-only production company (Exit, Pursued by a Bear), and the room was rough and intimate. The lighting wasn’t exactly flattering. And the floor was entirely uncooperative. (See more rehearsal photos in our Facebook album.)
That’s a far cry from the slick and wildly dynamic stage Set Designer Mimi Lien has created for The Golden Dragon at The New Ohio Theatre in the West Village. After last night’s dress rehearsals, we’re not sure we’ve seen anything quite like it.
Watch for production stills coming in the next few days. They hint at the magical context Mimi and Lighting Designer Nicole Pearce have created for the surreal world of The Golden Dragon.
It all begins tonight!
UPROOTS YOUR ASSUMPTIONS AND LEAVES A LINGERING TASTE OF SOMEONE ELSE’S BLOOD IN YOUR MOUTH - Time Out London

Have you ever experienced theatre? I mean really experienced it?
I’m not talking about the kind of night where you buy a ticket, grab a bite to eat, sit through a two-hour show, laugh idly, and then head home thinking about tomorrow’s to-do list.
I’m talking about getting completely viscerally wrapped up in an alternate reality. Where all five of your senses are startled awake, and your body becomes a part of the story. Where your mind stands at attention, even while your thoughts sneak around corners and peer under the furniture. Where, when the lights come up, you stumble out onto a street you don’t recognize anymore.
Having just sampled some of the features under construction for our upcoming show, I think The Golden Dragon is going to be that kind of experience. A complete experience.
Want to know what I mean? Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and here on Tumblr. We’ll be sharing a lot of fun information about the creation of The Golden Dragon throughout the run. Better yet? Experience it for yourself.

The Play Company
Cabaret Gourmet 2013 is in the books!
Last night, at The Play Company’s annual benefit gala, we sampled some of the most mouth-watering food NYC has to offer. There were savory tastings from August, Chef Samira, Market Table, Mehtaphor, and Swine. Kyotofu, Gramercy Tavern, and Valhrona Chocolates sweetened things up.

Everyone raved about the cocktails wizard mixologist Dale DeGroff whipped up with with Del Maguey mezcal, Tuthilltown gin (it’s summer in our minds, after all), and Dale’s own Pimento Aromatic Bitters. The Red Tail Ridge wines flew off the bar, and Pushcart Coffee went so well with dessert.

But amidst the joyful indulgence, the room went silent for the soulful stylings of two unforgettable Tony-nominated Broadway stars, Daniel Breaker (also our emcee) and De’Adre Aziza.

The night was a huge success, thanks in large part to enthusiastic support from our board, staff, and volunteers; participating chefs and their restaurants; and of course all of the fantastic Playco family who stepped out in support of our award-winning line-up of international theatre.
Check out the rest of the night’s photos in our Facebook album here.
